What Is Lasik ?
Lasik stands for Laser-Assisted-In-Situ Keratomileusis. Keratomileusis is the technical term for surgically reshaping your cornea, which is the rounded, transparent cover over your iris and pupil. How does LASIK work ?
During the LASIK procedure, a specially trained eye surgeon first creates a precise, thin hinged corneal flap using a microkeratome or Femtolaser like(Zed or Intralase). The surgeon then pulls back the flap to expose the underlying corneal tissue, and then the excimer laser ablates (reshapes) the cornea in a unique pre-specified pattern for each patient. The flap is then gently repositioned onto the underlying cornea without sutures.
Who is a good candidate for LASIK Surgery?
Like any laser surgical procedure, the go-ahead for Lasik surgery is not given to every spectacle-user. Some of the pre-requisites of laser lasik surgery are:
The candidate should be at least 18 years old.
The candidate should not be suffering from any eye disease/infection.
The candidate should not be a pregnant, nursing or planning to conceive.
The eye prescription should have been stable for about a year and the refractive error should fall within the permitted range for Lasik, Lasik -12 D.sph in 550m cornea.
